Cooperation and exchange between national institutions, and the city of Kaohsiung

María Máñez Costa, Claas Teichmann and Jo-Ting Huang-Lachmann from GERICS have had a series of important presentations and meetings, co-hosted a workshop, participated in a national forum and organized a training in Taiwan in the cities of Taipei and Kaohsiung.

By the invitation of National Development Council of Taiwan, GERICS collaborated with National Taiwan University for a project to co-develop a Taiwanese Climate Knowledge Hub. During the international workshop and the forum, María Máñez Costa and Claas Teichmann presented GERICS’ business models, climate services and products and shared the experience of how climate services could assist in climate change adaptation implementation. The GERICS team had meetings with important agencies in Taiwan: Central Weather Bureau and the GERICS’ MoU partner, The National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR). At official banquet events, GERICS also exchanged with representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), National Development Council (NDC), The National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), Academia Sinica, Central Weather Bureau, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), and National Taiwan University (NTU).

María Máñez Costa, Claas Teichmann and Jo-Ting Huang-Lachmann have successfully hosted a training for Kaohsiung City Government. Governmental officials from Bureaus of Environmental Protection, Water Resources, Public Works, Urban Development, ICLEI Kaohsiung Capacity Center, academics and NCDR have joined the training to learn how cities could develop policies for adaptation implementation and climate services and products for assisting cities’ climate adaptation. The Kaohsiung City is especially interested in GERICS Climate-Fact-Sheets and had a participatory session to practice drafting Climate Fact Sheets organized by GERICS.

Partners from Taiwan and GERICS are looking forward to further collaborations in the future, including personnel exchanges, co-organisations of science and practice events, and co-development of climate services for climate adaptation.
