For the first face-to-face all staff meeting, researchers from the CDRSynTra consortium of the CDRterra research line travelled to Hamburg and met for an exchange at GERICS in the Chilehaus from 22-24 March 2023. The researchers travelled from Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München - management, Deutsches Museum), Berlin (Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik), Potsdam (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, PIK as well as Potsdam Research Institute for Sustainability - Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, RIFS) and Kiel (GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel).

CDRterra is a research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The research programme investigates the various methods for CO2 removal from the atmosphere. The CDRSynTra synthesis project as part of the research programme brings together the results from the projects.

During the three days on site in Hamburg, an intensive exchange took place between the CDRSynTra partners as well as external guests from the ocean-related funding measure CDRmare. The aim of the meeting was to bring each other up to date on the current state of research and to optimise coordination between the work packages. It was a lively and fruitful exchange. The planning of upcoming events, such as a stakeholder workshop and an educational conference for teachers, which is planned for autumn in Munich, were also planned and discussed. Outwardly visible highlights are the participation of CDRSynTra representatives in the lead author teams of Working Group III and the Synthesis Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR6 WG III & SYR), as well as the first report "The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal", which gives an overview of the global status of CO₂ removals.

GERICS as a partner in the consortium CDRSynTra conducts dialogues with key actors from the agricultural sector in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. GERICS has presented the first results of this series of interviews for the agricultural sector on CO2 removal methods. The aim is to jointly identify existing practical knowledge, experiences, insights and challenges regarding CO2 removal methods, as well as knowledge gaps and information needs regarding climate change and barriers towards action.
