A three-day capacity building course for students and young scientists was conducted by GERICS from 24 to 26 February, 2025, at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Akure, Nigeria, in collaboration with the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at FUTA and the WASCAL Doctoral Research Programme in West African Climate Systems (DRP-WACS). During the course Dr Torsten Weber, Dr Alain Tamoffo (GERICS) and Dr Imoleayo E. Gbode (FUTA) gave lectures and practical exercises on regional climate modelling and climate data analysis, including an introduction to the EasyREMO training software. EasyREMO can generate three-year regional climate simulations under a low and a high emissions scenario for the end of the century over a sub-domain in West Africa on a laptop, to familiarise students with the principle of regional climate modelling. A total of 26 participants from different disciplines received a certificate for their successful participation in the course. At the end of the course, EasyREMO was handed over to the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at FUTA for future training purposes. The capacity building measure was part of the WASCAL WRAP2.0 LANDSURF project.

WASCAL WRAP 2.0 LANDSURF contributes to the Africa strategy of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is financed by the funding measure "WASCAL II - West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use". The funding measure WASCAL II is an initiative of the BMBF as part of the framework program "Research for Sustainable Development" (FONA3).
